Dolly’s Wedding, Raub 1899


WEDDING IN PAHANG

The first European wedding solemnized in Pahang took place at Raub on the 16th inst., the contracting parties being Mr. Charles W. Paul of New York, and Miss Alice Sarah Bibby (Dolly) eldest daughter of Mr. W. Bibby, Manager of the Raub mines.

The Rev. Frank Haines, Chaplain of Selangor, conducted the marriage ceremony at the residence of the Bride’s father. The bridegroom was supported by Mr. Arthur Bibby as best man, and the bride, who was dressed in a handsome gown of white brocaded silk (especially made in Kemaman) trimmed elaborately with white chiffon and sprays of orange blossom with a white felt hat, trimmed with white plumes to match, was attended by her father and by her two sisters, Miss Edith Bibby and Miss Nelly Bibby, who acted as bridesmaids and were gowned in white silk with picture hats to match.

Master W. Raub Bibby  the Page, wore a gold scarf pin the gift of the bridegroom; the bride wore a Raub gold curb chain bracelet, and the bridesmaids pretty gold brooches. After The ceremony the wedding march was played and there were shrieks of joy from the Raub mine whistles.

The bridal party were then photographed on the lawn, and after the wedding breakfast Mr. and Mrs. Paul left for the Semangkoh Pass, en route for Port Dickson, where the honey-moon is being spent. There were many valuable and useful presents.

Postscript: The Page boy was William Raub aged five, Annie Bibby’s eldest son, who was born in St Arnaud in 1894. Annie was the Author’s Grandmother. The twins born in Kuala Lumpur on the 3rd August 1898, Frederick James (the Author’s Father) and Arthur Edward were also there.  The image of the Marriage certificate has been kindly provided by the Svolos (Paul) family.
